Events dedicated to the Day of Belarusian Science

Event Date

Every year, on the last Sunday of January, Belarus celebrates the Day of Belarusian Science, officially established in 1993.

The leading research and scientific center of the country is the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, founded in 1928. Today it brings together highly qualified scientists of various specialties and dozens of research, scientific and production, design and implementation organizations.

The National Academy of Sciences employs more than 18 thousand researchers, technicians, support and maintenance personnel, including many doctors and candidates of sciences.

Recently, a number of reforms have been carried out in the scientific sphere of the republic, the main idea of which is the creation of a so-called parallel economy on the part of science. But the problem is that, despite the presence of the necessary regulatory framework, the conditions for the emergence and effective development of small innovative enterprises (they should become the basis of a parallel economy) are not the most favorable today. Large enterprises do not always have enough funds to implement new developments.

As a result, no more than 2-3% of agricultural and industrial products are renewed annually in the republic, and in order for it to be competitive, today it is necessary to renew at least 15%.

One of the most important indicators of scientific activity - the science intensity of GDP - in recent years has been about 1%. This is higher than in most CIS countries, but significantly lower than in Finland and Sweden, comparable to Belarus in size and population, where the research intensity of GDP is 3%. And yet, in the coming years, it is planned to bring this figure to 1.8%.

On their professional holiday, Belarusian scientists, scientists, employees of research institutes and everyone involved in scientific activities receive congratulations from friends, colleagues and government officials.
